In Rajasthan I visited several cities. The first city was Udaipur. Although the Rajasthani people have a reputation of being quite pushy, I liked the people in this city. Udaipur is famous for a few things: Miniture painting and the palace in the lake in which a part of the James Bond movie Octopussy was shot. Because of this, almost every restaurant in town shows this movie every night. After a few days you've had it. In Udaipur I was also introduced to bhang. Bhang is grinded male cannabis. They mix it with lassi (yoghurtdrink) which makes it a bhang lassi (it's as simple as that). Bhang is a legal substance while marijana (ganja) and hashish (charash) are defenitly not. Anyway, the first time I tried it, I thought: "Okay, I'm from Holland, let's try a strong one." With the consequence that I was utterly stoned for 5 hours. So it's not to be taken lightly.

After Udaipur I went to Jaisalmer, it's a nice town but in the end I could shoot the people there, also the bhang there was not so good as in Udaipur. After Jaisalmer I went to Jodphur (the blue city) and Pushkar. The local scam in Pushkar is that a "priest" offers you a flower and then you're supposed to throw that flower in the lake. After you done so, he starts to ask money for the offer you just brought to the gods. The amount depending on how much of a dickhead he thinks you are. I had some funny situations with these "priests".

Hotelowners armed with banners and leaflets attack you the minute you step out of the bus. Notice the soldier to prevent excesses. This didn't predict much good.

Jains are ultra-veganists: quote from the LP: "Some Jain monks go naked and use the palms of their hands as begging bowls. The slightly less ascetic maintain a bare minimum of possessions including a broom, with which they sweep the path before them to avoid stepping on any living thing, and a piece of cloth that is tied over their mouth to prevent the accidental inhalation of insects."

The pictures of the Jain temple are shot from the roof of the guesthouse I was staying in, with 70 roepies (around $ 1,50) a night for 2 people not a bad deal. Especially not because the room was like a room in a castle complete with a little balcony.
